Vol. 227 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Taxis and Hackneys.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of (a) taxis and (b) hackneys operating under licence at Shannon Airport and the annual fee which car-owners are obliged to pay for such licence.

No taxis as such operate at Shannon Airport. Fifteen hackney cars are authorised to operate. Hackney operators pay an annual charge of £15 per vehicle towards the cost of providing them with a room and counter in the Terminal Building.

Will the Minister now agree that he was not telling the full truth last week when he compared the system proposed in relation to Dublin Airport with that in operation in Shannon? There is no taxi service operating from Shannon but the service at Dublin is operated in the main by the traditional taximen of Dublin. This restriction which it is sought to apply in Dublin has no relation whatever with what operates at Shannon.

The principle is the same—the provision of a roadworthy vehicle service for the use of airport passengers.

I would like to point out to the Minister that the PSV men who ply at Shannon are selected by the airport authorities there and the airport authorities there have the first and last say in the selection of these men operating from Shannon Airport.

That is for hackneymen, not taximen.
