Vol. 227 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigs and Bacon Commission.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (a) the total administrative expenses of the Pigs and Bacon Commission for the year ended 31st December, 1966; (b) the total number of pigs sold by the Commission on export markets over the same period, both as bacon and pork, taking one cwt. of bacon as accounting for one pig; and (c) what it cost per pig to sell them.

The total administrative expenses of the Pigs and Bacon Commission for the year ended 31st December, 1966 were £129,563. The number of pigs sold by the Commission on export markets in that year as bacon or pork, taking one cwt. of bacon as representing one pig, was 654,092.

I am not quite clear as to the precise information sought in the third part of the question. The Commission's total administrative expenses represented 3/11½ per pig exported but these expenses, of course, also covered the cost of the many other functions performed by that body. Export subsidy paid represented 74/3 per pig exported. Advertising and publicity represented 2/11 per pig exported.
