Vol. 228 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Visit of Mrs. Kennedy.

1.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, in view of the coming visit to this country of Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, widow of the late President Kennedy, he will make a statement asking the cooperation of the people to ensure that Mrs. Kennedy will be given the privacy she desires.

2.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will consider securing the cooperation of the press to ensure that Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy is not subjected to undue publicity and the invasion of her privacy during her forthcoming stay in Ireland; and if he will consider taking particular steps to ensure the cooperation of foreign press representatives to that end.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. The Government will of course take all appropriate steps to enlist the cooperation of the public and of the press, both Irish and foreign, with a view to ensuring that Mrs. Kennedy and her children will enjoy the kind of holiday in Ireland which she desires.

If the purpose is to avoid undesired publicity, is the employment of the Parliamentary Question two months before the lady arrives at all not a somewhat inappropriate procedure?
