Vol. 229 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef Subsidy.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is now in a position to pay the beef subsidy direct to the producers.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the general dissatisfaction with the manner in which the beef subsidy is being paid; and, if so, if he will make this subsidy payable to the farmer and not to the exporter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose taking Question Nos. 12 and 13 together.

I have already made it clear that I shall be very happy to have the beef export subsidy paid direct to producers if a feasible system of doing so can be evolved. My Department is continuing its efforts to overcome some substantial practical difficulties in the way of introducing such a system for that part of our cattle output which is at present supported by the subsidy. I am hopeful, however, that it will be possible to effect some appropriate modifications in the present arrangements.
