Vol. 229 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Yields.

18.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will explain why it has not been possible to raise the average milk yield per cow more than eight gallons during the past ten years.

The figures to which the Deputy refers are global estimates computed by dividing an estimate of total milk production by the estimated number of milch cows, excluding those suckling calves, and I have some reservations about their real significance, especially as, in the case of milk supplied to creameries, the average quantity per cow increased from 371 gallons in 1955 to 454 gallons in 1965—a rise of over 20 per cent.
