Vol. 229 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Grants.

71.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of the year ended 31st March, 1967 (a) the number of housing grants i.e. grants paid by his Department for the erection, reconstruction, improvement or purchase of dwelling houses by private individuals and public utility societies; and (b) the number of housing subsidies i.e. contributions towards local authority loan charges on certain housing grants to local authorities, etc.

During the year ended 31st March, 1967, 20,109 grants were paid by my Department to private persons, public utility societies and agencies other than local authorities for the erection of new dwellings, the reconstruction of existing dwellings, and the installation of water and sewerage facilities.

Subsidy payments by my Department to local authorities relate to about 16,000 housing schemes or most of the 127,000 or so houses provided by local authorities since 1932 for which the relevant loans have not been fully repaid.
