Vol. 229 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Anne Street (Dublin) Post Office.

6.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why the post office situated at South Anne Street, Dublin, is not described on its front in the English as well as the Irish language; and if his attention has been drawn to the difficulty it causes to tourists, unacquainted with one of the national languages, in finding it and to the inconvenience, even though cheerfully borne by the shopkeepers of the street itself, in directing them to their destination.

It has for many years been the practice to designate new Departmentally staffed post offices as "Oifig an Phoist" only. I am not aware that the absence of an English version of the sign over South Anne Street Post Office has caused any difficulty or inconvenience.

I am aware that it has caused it. Whilst I do not want to make any issue about its being described only in the Irish language, I should like the Parliamentary Secretary to look into the difficulties of design——

The Deputy is not asking a question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that owing, perhaps, to the very good design of that post office it is extremely difficult to see that it is a post office? That may be news to the Parliamentary Secretary but it is not like the average run of a post office and so I am told and have had evidence of the fact——

The Deputy is still making a speech.

I should like the Parliamentary Secretary to look into it to see if some projection from the building might be possible. There is a very slight projection with "Telefón" on it. It is too low down.

I cannot allow the Deputy to make a speech. He should ask a question.

Is the Minister aware of these defects in an otherwise admirable building which lead to great confusion among tourists?

He might not be able to find it.

Tourists would not be able to find it.

I am aware of this post office. It is quite obviously a post office.

It looks like a florist's.

There is a florist next door.

Due to the layout of the building, it is quite obviously a post office.

As Deputy Ryan has said, it is something like a florist's, which is a very nice thing, but it is somewhat difficult to find.
