Vol. 229 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leinster House Portrait.

23.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance when the portrait of the late Patrick Hogan will be restored to the House.

The portrait of the late Patrick Hogan was taken down last December because part of the wall on which it hung had to be demolished to make an entrance to the new corridor linking the Dáil landing with the new office block. The portrait will be re-hung when the reconstruction work now in progress is completed and following consultation with the Committee on Procedure and Privileges.

Were the Committee consulted before the portrait was taken down?

I am not aware whether they were or not. The Deputy will realise that it would be very difficult to remove the wall without taking down the portrait.

And the Parliamentary Secretary will appreciate that it would be more courteous if those who had the authority to do these things were asked. Do not forget that this was attempted before and the Committee on Procedure and Privileges would not allow the Government to take this portrait down.

I am not so aware.

You are aware of it now, and you have also taken down the portrait of Tom Johnston and put it in the cellar with others.

If Deputy Tully can tell the Office of Public Works a practical way by which a wall may be removed and a picture hanging on the wall left in position, we will be glad to hear about it.

Fianna Fáil have been doing that for years—leaving things hanging in mid-air.

They took down some pictures before and they had to put them back.
