Vol. 229 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illegitimate Children (Affiliation Orders) Act.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice what progress has been made in relation to the amendment of section 3 subsection (1) of the Illegitimate Children (Affiliation Orders) Act, 1930 to provide for an increase in the maximum amounts payable to the mother by the putative father under this statutory provision.

I have previously indicated that I consider the maximum amounts payable under this statutory provision to be inadequate. I propose to increase them, and to increase also the maximum sums which the district court may order to be paid to deserted wives.

An opportunity for doing this will present itself either in the proposed Bill to increase the jurisdiction of the district court or in the legislation which will be necessary to implement the arrangements which I hope to conclude for the reciprocal enforcement of maintenance and affiliation orders between ourselves and Britain and Northern Ireland. Proposals for both measures are at present under examination.
