Vol. 229 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Day Nurseries.

45.

asked the Minister for Health whether the setting up of day nurseries for mothers who are forced to go to work is contemplated and whether his Department have given consideration to the special problems of working mothers.

Mr. O'Malley

There is no statutory authority for the operation of day nurseries by health authorities and I have received no representations as to the necessity for such a service.

It is a sphere, I think, in which voluntary agencies can operate most successfully and a number of day nurseries are operated at present by such agencies and by private individuals.

I have received representations that health authorities should have power of inspection over such premises and the matter is under examination in my Department.

I will consider the general question of day nurseries in conjunction with this investigation.
