Vol. 229 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Cottage Repairs.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government why a Dublin County Council tenant living in Tallaght who applied to purchase her cottage in February, 1966 has not yet had the necessary repairs completed or the house vested; how long it usually takes the council to carry out repairs and vest cottages; how soon the tenant in question may expect the repair work to commence and to be completed; and when the house will be vested.

I understand that work on the only cottage in Tallaght in respect of which a purchase application made in February, 1966, is outstanding, is in progress and should be completed in about three weeks. The cottage will then be vested.

The time required to have prevesting repairs carried out by the council depends largely on the extent of the repairs and the trades needed to carry them out. For some of the older cottages to which extensive repairs are necessary, it may run to over a year from the date of the application to vest. For newer cottages, the time is very much shorter. For example, 94 out of 138 cottages in the 1966 Purchase Scheme which came into force on 16th January last, have already been vested and, at present, the council have no vesting applications on hands relating to this scheme.

Is the Minister aware that the work commenced after the question was put down?

I do not run Dublin County Council.

It shows the power of the question.

I understand the council are very slow and I know why.

You have made statements as to why that were quite untrue.

I know why the prefab houses were not erected in Saggart, and I know who was behind it and why he was behind it.

(Cavan): You tried to impose your standards but did not succeed.
