Vol. 229 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Prohibitions.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the unnecessary prohibition on parking of motor vehicles on the east side of Rathfarnham Road and on the west side of Terenure Road North near the Terenure Cross traffic lights, he will amend the Dublin Parking Bye-Laws, 1962 to permit parking for limited periods at those locations, having particular regard to the serious loss to traders and the inconvenience to shoppers caused by the indiscriminate enforcement of the parking prohibitions there.

The enforcement of parking restrictions imposed by the bye-laws is a matter for the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána and any amendment of the bye-laws would be a matter, in the first instance, for the Commissioner. I am having the Deputy's representations brought to his notice.

Would the Minister also bring to the Commissioner's notice a fact of which I imagine the Minister is aware, that is, that the western side of Rathfarnham Road is about ten feet to the left of the western side of Terenure Road North and that a somewhat similar situation applies when coming from Rathfarnham Road into Terenure Road North and that, as a consequence, the portion of the roadway in question will remain idle if parking is prohibited on it; it will not be used by passing traffic, and therefore no useful purpose is served by prohibiting parking of vehicles on these stretches of road?

I will draw the Commissioner's attention to that.
