Vol. 229 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Division in Eastern Counties.

22.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will improve and accelerate the division of land in the eastern counties, if necessary by transferring staff back to these areas to expedite this division.

The speedy disposal of lands pending for division in the eastern counties—and throughout the country generally—is high on the Land Commission's list of priorities. During the last five complete financial years, the aggregate area allotted in the 12 counties of Leinster was approximately 55,000 acres.

As a temporary measure it has been found necessary to divert some inspectorate staff from the eastern division to assist in carrying out detailed surveys of the pilot areas prior to the initiation of an intensified land settlement programme in those regions. I might add, however, that a number of additional inspectors are now being recruited from recent competitions and it is expected that some of these will be available shortly. Competitions for the recruitment of further inspectors will be held soon.
