Vol. 229 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation in Monaghan School.

35.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the inadequacy of accommodation for infant pupils in Saint Louis' national school, Monaghan, for the next school year; and if he will provide extra classrooms to accommodate them.

Mr. O'Malley

I am aware of the inadequacy of classroom accommodation in Monaghan Convent infants' national school and, in order to relieve the situation, my Department sanctioned a grant in October, 1966, towards the cost of providing a pre-fabricated classroom there. The conductors of the school have since intimated that they wish to have the school extended by the addition of a classroom built in traditional style, rather than a prefabricated room, and the Commissioners of Public Works have been requested to make the necessary arrangements in that regard.

Does the Minister think that the provision of the permanent building will be possible before September? If it is a longer-term plan, is it reasonable to consider the question of providing temporary accommodation in September while the permanent accommodation is being constructed?

Mr. O'Malley

Yes, that would be the sensible thing to do.
