Vol. 230 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lough Swilly Forts.

4.

asked the Minister for Defence the annual cost of maintenance of the two forts situated on Lough Swilly in County Donegal; and if he considers that such expenditure is justified.

The cost of maintenance for the financial year 1966-67 at Fort Dunree was £3,253 and at Fort Lenan was £485. The sum of £3,253 for Fort Dunree included £1,356 for wages of civilian maintenance staff and £1,097 for contributions in lieu of rates paid to Donegal County Council. The sum of £485 for Fort Lenan included £455 for contribution in lieu of rates paid to Donegal County Council. I consider the expenditure justified.

Fort Dunree is required for military purposes and is used for FCA training.

Equipment at Fort Lenan has been sold and on its removal the fort will be handed over to the Office of Public Works.
