Vol. 230 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Jurors.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is now in a position to state when legislation will be introduced to provide for the payment of jurors.

I am considering all aspects of the jury system in the light of the three Interim Reports on the subject which have been submitted to me by the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure. The remuneration of jurors is one of the matters being examined. I propose to introduce comprehensive amending legislation as soon as I can.

Is the Minister aware that over 200 of these unfortunate men were called away from their farms last week and had to spend the whole week in Cork waiting for 12 of them to be called?

I agree with Deputy Corry about the hardship involved, and I hope to introduce legislation to deal with the matter within the next few months.

Is that an inspired question? Did the Minister tell Deputy Corry to put it down?

There is nobody who will tell Deputy Corry anything.
