Vol. 230 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Organisation of Post Office.

29.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, following his recent discussions in London with the British Postmaster General regarding the future conduct of the affairs of the British post office by a State Corporation, any decision has yet been taken to organise the post office in this country on similar lines; and, if not, when such a decision may be taken.

No such decision has been taken. As I said in reply to a Parliamentary Question on 26th July last, the main object of my visit to London was to inform myself at first hand of the arrangements being made for the future conduct of the affairs of the British Post Office. Changes have been made in recent years in the organisation and powers of my Department in order to enable it to act more freely and to cultivate a more commercial approach in the conduct of its services. I have had the general position under examination for some time past and I am certain that some administrative changes are desirable but I am unable to say when a decision will be reached on what changes should be made. Any changes that may be decided upon will, of course, be determined in relation to conditions in this country.
