Vol. 230 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Exports.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the reason for the drop of £1,240,000 in bacon exports to Britain during the first eight months of the present year.

The reason for the decline in bacon exports this year is that pig production has been passing through the downward phase of one of the cyclical movements which characterise the pig industry. The June livestock census and a limited census carried out in September both show a significant and continuing increase in the number of sows and gilts-in-pig, and this suggests that an expansion in production can be expected in the months ahead.
