Vol. 230 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Quota.

42.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the Government have applied to the British Board of Trade for an increase of 1,000 tons on the current butter quota; if he has seen the British Minister concerned with this matter; and, if so, what the results of the application have been.

This country's basic quota for butter imports into the UK was increased for the current year by 3,000 tons to 26,000 tons. Because of the substantial increase in our milk production this year an approach was made to the appropriate British authorities last month for a further allocation of 1,000 tons for the current year. In view, however, of the supply position on the UK market no undertaking could be given by the British authorities that the extra butter would be accepted from us but our request will be borne in mind should the supply situation change.
