Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Increases.

127.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of each order made in respect of each item subject to price increase since 26th July, 1967 with special reference to household goods, light and fuel; the increase in the cost of living as a result of all such price increases which must be paid by the purchaser or consumer; if he will give the date and the amount of such increases; and the present increased prices compared to the prices charged for such goods on 26th July, 1967.

The only commodities over which I exercise price control by statutory order are certain categories of bottled milk in the Dublin Sales District and intoxocating liquor and non-alcoholic beverages. I have not made any order since 26th July, 1967, permitting price increases in respect of these commodities.

Since 26th July, I have agreed to 44 price increases in relation to a variety of commodities. As the particulars of these increases are in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the statement in the Official Report.

I am unable to say what effect the permitted increases since 26th July may have on the cost of living as the next Consumer Price Index figure will relate to mid-November, 1967 and will not be available for some time. The Consumer Price Index at mid-August, 1967, the latest date available, showed no change over that at mid-May, 1967. In respect of fuel and light and sundries, which includes household goods, the Index shows a slight fall between mid-May and mid-August, 1967.

Following is the statement:

INCREASES in Prices and charges which are being or have been put into effect following compliance with the requirements of the Minister for Industry and Commerce during the period 26th July, 1967 to 11th October, 1967.
