Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farming Losses.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the very serious plight of many farmers whose crops have been completely destroyed by bad weather conditions; and what steps he proposes to take to compensate these farmers for their losses.

I do not accept that the situation is as described by the Deputy. In general the grain harvest has been reasonably satisfactory. While some difficulties arose in the marketing of wheat in particular areas the fact is that about 95 per cent of the crop has been marketed to date and of this 94 per cent has been paid for at the full millable price. In the circumstances the question of compensation does not arise.
