Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Forestry Employment.

62.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there has been a reduction in the number employed on forestry work in Mayo in recent times; and if he will take the steps necessary to have employment provided for these workers.

For reasons which I explained fully in this year's debate on the Forestry Estimate, there has been some decline in the level of forestry employment throughout the country and County Mayo has not been an exception. The main cause is the inadequacy of our plantable reserve which is interfering with the planting programme.

So far as County Mayo itself is concerned, the prospects of an upward trend in the next few years will depend on the success of the efforts which I am making to increase the intake of land.
