Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Refund.

71.

asked the Minister for Finance why an income tax refund due to a person (details supplied) is being paid by weekly instalments instead of in one sum; the statutory authority which permits the Revenue Commissioners to pay their debts by instalments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 11th August the taxpayer in question furnished the certificate necessary to vouch her claim to a repayment of income tax for the year ended 5th April, 1967.

The inspector of taxes gave effect to the repayment by having it set off against the taxpayer's liability for the current year, thereby reducing the amount of tax deducted from her salary each week.

The taxpayer maintained that the repayment due for the year 1966-67 should be made to her direct as a separate matter, and she was, in fact, correct in her contention.

The inspector of taxes, who had erroneously refused the request, has now corrected the position, and a payable order for the amount due has been issued to the taxpayer.
