Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment of Visiting Personalities.

75.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will say, in relation to the visit to this country recently of Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, on whose instructions they were granted VIP treatment at all customs offices both at the airport and the Border; and why they were not subject to the normal customs regulations applicable to persons entering the country.

No special instructions were issued to the customs at any time as to the treatment to be accorded to the visitors referred to by the Deputy. When they arrived at Dublin Airport in August last, they received no special facilities and they presented their baggage for customs clearance in the ordinary way.

Similarly, they would have been subject to the normal procedures at any customs post on the Border. In fact, however, the officials concerned have no recollection of these people crossing the Border.

Are we to assume that there is no justification for this question?

That is a separate question.

I cannot indicate whether a question is justified or not. I can only give replies on the facts as I know them.
