Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - District Probate Registries.

90.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons newly employed in respect of the eight new district probate registries established in Clonmel, Donegal, Dundalk, Galway, Mullingar, Sligo, Tralee and Wexford on the 1st January 1967; if he will give details of the increased expenditure, actual or estimated, involved; and if, in view of the reduced work which might now be expected at the previously existing probate registries in Castlebar, Cavan, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford, any reduction of staff was made in any of these registries.

Eight persons have been employed, that is, one officer in respect of each registry.

The increased expenditure involved is estimated at £4,000 for the current financial year.

The area served by the Kilkenny registry has not been altered, so that the question of reduced work does not arise there. No reduction of staff has been made in any of the five other registries referred to. The staffing position is being kept under review in the light of the volume of work under the new arrangements. I may mention, however, that in four of the six registries in question, only one officer is employed.
