Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Cell Death Tribunal.

93.

asked the Minister for Justice the cost of the Cork cell death tribunal; the number of witnesses; and the number of persons employed in connection with the tribunal.

94.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is yet in a position to issue the report of the recent cell death tribunal in Cork.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 94 together.

As indicated in the public press on 10th October, it seems unlikely, because of the continuing illness of one of the members, that the tribunal will be in a position to present its report until early in November.

Seventy-seven witnesses appeared before the tribunal. In addition to the Registrar to the tribunal, four stenographers and five other staff were employed to record the evidence and produce overnight transcripts. Senior and junior counsel, instructed by solicitors, totalling ten legal representatives, appeared on behalf of the Attorney General for the assistance of the tribunal and for the Commissioner, Garda Síochána and for individual gardaí concerned.

The cost of the inquiry cannot be established pending the receipt of a large number of outstanding claims in respect of remuneration, expenses, etc. In accordance with standard practice, the cost of the inquiry will be shown in the printed report which will be placed on sale in due course.

Will the State pay all the costs?

The House asked for it.

Is it the Minister's intention to communicate the report to the Dáil on his receiving it?

Promptly on receiving it, it will be placed before both Houses of the Oireachtas.
