Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scott Medal.

96.

asked the Minister for Justice the origin of the Scott Medal awarded for bravery to members of the Garda; the number of these awards made in recent years; if any cases are under consideration for the award of this medal at present; and if any proposal has been agreed or is under consideration whereby the Scott Medal will no longer be presented.

In 1924 the late Colonel Walter Scott, then Honorary Police Commissioner, New York City, presented to the Garda Síochána an investment of $1,000 to defray the cost of presenting medals for outstanding valour to members of the Force.

A total of 14 medals—two gold, eight silver and four bronze—were awarded in respect of the five years 1962 to 1966 inclusive. There are no cases under consideration at present, as recommendations in respect of the present year will not, in accordance with practice, be considered until after the end of the year.

There is no proposal to discontinue the award of the Scott Medal.
