Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Increase.

106.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider granting a further increase in pensions to old age pensioners, as many of them are finding it very hard to live on 52s 6d or 57s 6d per week, especially those who live in towns.

Legislation for the purpose of increasing non-contributory old age pensions is not at present contemplated.

I would remind the Deputy, however, that as recently as August last increases in non-contributory old age pensions were introduced at a cost of the order of £1½ million a year. Valuable concessions in regard to free travel and free electricity also have been granted.
