Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Education the number of (a) boys and (b) girls who failed the leaving certificate examination solely because of their failure to satisfy the examiners in Irish.

The number of candicates who this year failed the leaving certificate examination solely because of failure in Irish was (a) 85 boys and (b) 72 girls. This represents only slightly over one per cent of the candidates sitting for the leaving certificate examination.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of students who obtained (a) honours and (b) a simple pass, and the percentage who failed in this year's leaving and intermediate certificate examinations.

28.39 per cent

Pass:

62.36 per cent

Fail:

9.25 per cent

Intermediate Certificate:

Honours:

42.09 per cent

Pass:

43.40 per cent
