Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free School Books.

117.

asked the Minister for Education if he will say why no official statement was made in relation to the scheme of free school books to certain children of lower income groups until it was announced by a member at a Fianna Fáil Cumann meeting in County Kerry; if he will now give full details as to who are entitled to free school books; and when the scheme will come into operation.

Mr. O'Malley

I announced this scheme in the House on the 30th November, 1966. A detailed circular in regard to it was sent to the secondary schools on 20th September and to vocational schools on 29th September. The statement mentioned by the Deputy was made on the 4th October.

A copy of the circular is being placed in the records of the House.

Is there any limit to the amount of money that can be expended by the schools on these free books?

That would be a separate question.
