asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount advanced for house purchase loans by building societies in each of the last ten years; and the number of individual transactions in each year.

Particulars of the amounts advanced annually on mortgages by the building societies may be obtained from the annual reports of the Registrar of Friendly Societies, copies of which are available in the Library of the House. I propose, however, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report, a tabular statement showing the particulars. The information for 1966 has not yet been published and is not complete, but the total figure is probably about £7.5 million of which about £6.9 million is in respect of advances for the purchase of dwelling houses. Details of the number of individual mortgages are not readily available.
