Vol. 231 No. 5

Private Notice Question. - Dublin Health Authority Turf Supplies.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that because of the industrial dispute in Bord na Móna, Dublin Health Authority has less than two days supply of turf left to operate the free fuel scheme for pensioners and other social welfare and home assistance recipients; and having regard to the hardship which will be caused to such persons by the non-availability of free fuel, if he will take steps to provide them with alternative supplies of fuel.

I understand that Dublin Health Authority has approximately three to four days supply of turf available to operate the cheap fuel scheme. The contractor to the authority for the supply of turf is making every effort to obtain additional supplies, but it will be appreciated that continuation of the industrial dispute referred to will render the question of continuity of further regular supplies of turf extremely difficult. The Dublin Health Authority is considering what alternative arrangement will be practicable to assist those in need to obtain other fuel supplies, if turf should not be available.

Would the Minister consider the provision of a cash voucher equivalent to the value of the fuel, in the event, which we hope does not occur, of turf supplies not being available?

I understand that is one of the alternatives being considered.

I know that the strikers in question are quite sympathetic and, if possible, an effort will be made to assist those unfortunate people who are the most deserving element in the community. I would urge on the Minister to do everything possible to see that they are provided with fuel.

Surely the Minister knows that the only thing necessary to get through the strike pickets is that the person going to get the turf for Dublin Health Authority should have a letter authorising him to collect it. If such a person had this letter, there would be no question of the turf being refused. On previous occasions, persons not authorised used this excuse to get out supplies of turf and other commodities. Would the Minister ensure that the Dublin Health Authority supplier would have some authority to get it. If he has that, he will be given the turf.

I was hoping that it would be able to work out in that way.
