Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Telephone Kiosks.

3.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have erected at the village of Cheekpoint, County Waterford, a telephone kiosk which will have a connection with Waterford city for the full 24 hours.

Provision of a kiosk would not be warranted at present. A coinbox telephone in the village is available to the public up to 10.0 p.m. on weekdays and for emergency calls the Post Office telephone is available at all hours. Neither of these installations is heavily used.

Do I understand the Minister to say that the Post Office telephone has a direct line to Waterford exchange? Perhaps my information is wrong, but I was down in the village of 300 people and I was informed by them that in a case of illness, they either have to travel by car to Passage, where there is a direct line, to make a phone call or have to go into Waterford city, eight miles away. I doubt very much if what the Minister says is true and I would like him to check on the information he has got from somebody.

I have no reason to suppose it is inaccurate. I gather the public telephone is in the post office.

The nearest public telephone is in the post office which closes down at 10 o'clock.

No, this line is available to the public during business hours, and also in case of an emergency. If the Deputy likes, I shall check it.

I would like the Minister to check it.

The Parliamentary Secretary is not allowed to see the reply now.

4.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will now have a public telephone kiosk erected at Vicarstown, Portlaoise, County Laois, in view of further repeated requests for one.

A kiosk is not warranted at present, but the question will be kept under review and one will be installed if circumstances justify it.

Agriculture and Fisheries awake.

I am awake as the Deputy has found out on many occasions and will again.
