Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Changing of Street Names.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that under the present regulations governing the changing of street names the decision to change the name of an important street may in some cases rest in the hands of a few rated occupiers; and if he will amend these regulations to provide that in the case of important business streets the views of the citizens in general as well as those of the rated occupiers will be taken into account before a change of name can be made.

The decision to change a street name is, by virtue of section 78 of the Local Government Act, 1946, a reserved function of the appropriate local authority subject to the condition that the authority may change the name only with the consent of foursevenths of the ratepayers in the street. I have no proposals for the amendment of the legislation governing this matter.
