Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Communist Activities.

92.

asked the Minister for Justice if the activities of the communist movement have come under notice in this country; if so, to what extent; if the movements of certain persons are kept under observation; if aliens who visit this country with communist records in their countries are kept under observation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy should be aware, the expression of communistic opinions is not contrary to law. It is, of course, the duty of the police to keep themselves informed of all possible dangers of subversion, from whatever source, but the extent to which this may be done in any particular set of circumstances is a confidential police matter which I could not discuss without making it impossible for the police to do their job effectively.
