Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Industrial School Pupils.

104.

asked the Minister for Education the average amount for all services paid by the State in respect of each industrial school pupil for the financial year ended 31st March, 1967; and if this amount can be increased.

The most recently available figure for average public expenditure per pupil in industrial schools is £167. The question of increasing the capitation grants to these schools is at present under consideration.

105.

asked the Minister for Education what percentage of pupils leaving industrial schools were apprenticed to any trade in the years 1966 and 1967, and of these the percentage apprenticed to (a) hotel trades, (b) tailoring and (c) other trades.

I presume the Deputy desires to know the percentage of industrial school children who entered employment in the trades mentioned rather than the percentage formally apprenticed. The vast majority of children leaving industrial schools are discharged to their parents or friends and no records are available of the subsequent employment of these. Of those in respect of whom records are available, in the year ended 30th June, 1966, 30 were employed in hotels, 2 in tailoring and 97 in other occupations. The corresponding figures for the year ended 30th June, 1967 are 17, 4 and 86 respectively.

106.

asked the Minister for Education what percentage of pupils leaving industrial schools in the years 1966 and 1967 possessed (a) the leaving certificate, (b) the intermediate certificate, (c) the group certificate, and (d) the primary certificate.

Many of the children in industrial schools are discharged when still too young to have reached the standard required to sit for even the primary certificate and to quote the percentage figures sought by the Deputy would therefore be misleading. The relevant numbers are as set out below.
