Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Acceptance of Leaving Certificate in Britain.

110.

asked the Minister for Education if he will initiate negotiations with his counterpart in Great Britain with a view to having the leaving certificate accepted as an equivalent entrance qualification to the advanced level GCE for entry into universities and professional grades in Great Britain.

The programme and examination structure for the Leaving Certificate differ considerably from those of the General Certificate of Education. The Irish course and examination are geared to Irish conditions and requirements and I do not think that it would be appropriate to take action on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
