Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Killarney Convent School.

114.

asked the Minister for Education the present position in relation to the proposed new national school to replace the existing one at the Mercy Convent, Killarney; and whether consideration of the proposal will be expedited having regard to the existing over-crowded conditions in the school and to the increasing population in the area.

The Commissioners of Public Works have recommended the replacement of the Convent of Mercy national school by a new building, and have reported that a site which has been offered for the new building is suitable.

As the three convent schools in Killarney are old buildings, and the question of the replacement of two of them has already been raised, I find it necessary to have an investigation made as to whether any re-organisation of the educational facilities for girls in the town is desirable, since the building of new schools now will set a pattern for many years to come. I have directed that that investigation be completed with all possible speed so that the arrangements for providing the necessary new school accommodation will not be delayed.
