Vol. 231 No. 11

Ceistenna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

9.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government if any scheme of water supply is in train to supply the town of Kilkee with a suitable and sufficient supply of water for the coming year.

It would be a matter for the local authority to initiate proposals for the improvement of the Kilkee water supply in the coming year.

The long term improvement of the town's supply will be provided for as part of the West Clare regional water supply scheme which will be considered in my Department in conjunction with the review of regional schemes generally at present being carried out.

(Clare): Will the Minister say if he will urge expedition because of the position this enjoys in the group developments?

Yes, I am aware that this is a particularly urgent scheme.

Surely that supplementary was out of order?

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange with Kerry County Council for an improvement in the water supply to Glenbeigh as the present system is not capable of meeting the demand and as Glenbeigh is one of the most important tourist centres on the Ring of Kerry and needs a first class water supply.

There are no proposals before my Department for an improvement in the water supply to Glenbeigh but I am informed by Kerry County Council that they are at present investigating the water supply position in that area.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received completed costs, etc., from Kerry County Council for the Smerwick and Beenbawn water extension schemes; and, if so, if he has yet issued approval for an immediate start as this extensive guest house and tourist area has needed this extension for years.

There are no proposals before my Department for a water supply extension for Smerwick and Beenbawn but I understand that Kerry County Council are preparing preliminary proposals for a scheme to serve these two areas.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received a proposal from Kerry County Council for the erection of the head works for the Emlaghmore water scheme; and, if so, if his approval has yet issued as there is a very large group water scheme awaiting completion of this scheme and as an early start is extremely urgent to help the milk farmers of the area.

Preliminary proposals for the Emlaghmore water supply scheme were approved by me on 25th January, 1967, and the submission of working drawings for the scheme is awaited.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received completed proposals for Mount Eagle water scheme at Ventry; and, if so, if he has issued approval to enable an early start to be made on the scheme by Kerry County Council.

Contract documents for this scheme have been received in my Department. I understand that the local authority have experienced difficulties in acquiring the necessary land rights. A decision on the scheme will be given when these difficulties have been resolved.
