Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain from Kerry County Council when work will start on the Latievebeg, Ballyferriter, water extension.

There are no proposals before my Department for a water supply extension for Latievebeg, Ballyferriter, but I am informed by Kerry County Council that they are at present preparing a preliminary proposal for such a scheme.

45.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department are aware of the position operating in the town of Kilkee, County Clare, regarding its household water supply; and if he is satisfied that this highly popular holiday resort is capable of meeting the demands likely to be made on it in this regard during the coming holiday season of 1968.

46.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the great concern expressed by Clare County Council regarding an adequate water supply for the town of Kilkee during the holiday season of 1968; and if he is willing to meet a deputation appointed by that council to present the position to him as it is presented to them by their technical officials.

47.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals for regional water supplies in the administrative County of Clare are before his Department at present; the dates on which they were received by his Department; and when he expects decisions to be taken authorising construction work to be undertaken in their regard.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 45, 46 and 47 together.

Two regional water supply schemes in County Clare are before my Department. These are the West Clare Scheme and the Kilmurry/Kilkishen/ O'Callaghan's Mills/Bunratty Scheme.

Revised contract drawings for the West Clare scheme were received in my Department on 10th February, 1967. I am fully aware of the importance of this scheme in the context of the improvement of the Kilkee water supply and I have accordingly indicated to the local authority that I would be prepared to consider a modified scheme to serve Kilkee. In the circumstances the reception of a deputation would serve no purpose. As I have already informed the Deputy in reply to a previous question it would be a matter for the local authority to initiate proposals for the improvement of the Kilkee water supply in the coming year.

A preliminary report on the Kilmurry/Kilkishen/O'Callaghan's Mills/ Bunratty scheme was submitted in October, 1965, further data being submitted in June, 1966, and March, 1967. The scheme is included in the review of regional schemes which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities generally throughout the country and any decision on it must await the outcome of that review.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects to sanction proposals for the provision of a new water supply scheme at Kinsale, County Cork; and when he expects that work on the scheme will commence.

The proposal of Kinsale Urban District Council for the replacement of existing watermains in the town was submitted to my Department in August, 1967, and is at present under examination in the light of the consultant's further report of 10th instant.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he can now fix a date for sanction of the Cobh water improvement scheme loan application made in March, 1965.

A loan to finance the Cobh water supply improvement scheme was approved by me on 25th ultimo.

I thank the Minister.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his Department have received any recent proposals from Limerick County Council with regard to the very bad water supply service at Patrickswell, County Limerick; and if he will favourably consider any concrete proposals for the short term alleviation of the hardship caused to residents in the area by the inadequacy of the present water supply to the village and surrounding area.

The Patrickswell water supply improvement and extension scheme, contract documents for which were submitted to my Department on 31st January, 1967, is included in the review of regional schemes in County Limerick and elsewhere, which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities generally throughout the country. A decision in regard to this scheme must await the outcome of this review.

I understand that the local authority have no interim proposals in mind for the area.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his Department have received any recent proposals from Limerick County Council with regard to the very bad water supply service at Kilmallock, County Limerick; and if he will favourably consider any concrete proposals for the short-term alleviation of the hardship caused to residents in the area by the inadequacy of the present supply to the town.

The Kilmallock regional water supply scheme together with a number of other regional water supply schemes in County Limerick and elsewhere is included in the review of regional schemes generally which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities throughout the country. Any decision in its respect must await the outcome of that review.

I am informed by Limerick County Council, however, that they are at present investigating the possibility of installing a booster pump to help remedy inadequacies in the existing supply.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government why Waterford County Council have not as yet got the State grant in respect of the water and sewerage schemes applied for by the council in 1967-68.

I presume that the Deputy's question relates to the borrowing of moneys to finance these schemes.

Details of minor water and sewerage schemes which the Waterford County Council propose to carry out in 1967-68 were submitted to my Department on 6th December, 1967, and 10th January, 1968, and are at present under examination.

The question of making borrowing facilities available does not arise until such time as the schemes have been approved.

A decision on the schemes and on the relevant financing proposals will be issued shortly.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state for each of the years from 1957 to 1967, the amount of Government grants allotted to each of the local authorities in the country for water and sewerage schemes to be carried out by them; and the actual amount drawn by each local authority in the year 1967 to date.

The statistics sought by the Deputy in the first part of his question are not readily available and would take an inordinate amount of time, which would not be justified, to compile.

The information requested in the second part of the question is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain from Kerry County Council when work will start on the Castlemaine sewerage scheme; and if all the arrangements for this scheme are complete.

There are no proposals awaiting sanction in my Department for a sewerage scheme for Castlemaine, County Kerry, but I am informed by Kerry County Council that a preliminary report for such a scheme is in course of preparation.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain from Kerry County Council when work will commence on the Murreigh sewerage scheme, Ballydavid; and if he will emphasise the necessity of getting the scheme under way at an early date.

There are no proposals before my Department for a sewerage scheme for Murreigh, Ballydavid, County Kerry, and I am informed by Kerry County Council that they have no proposals in mind for the area.

56.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain from Kerry County Council the reason for the delay in tarring the road at Ballinskelligs which was dug up during the laying of the sewer lines there; and when it will be put back in its former state.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in putting the Ballinskelligs sewerage scheme, County Kerry into operation; and when the people of the area will be allowed to connect to it.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 57 together.

I understand that the road surface at Ballinskelligs which was dug up during the laying of the sewer has been restored, and that any cleaning up operations that still remain to be undertaken will be completed as soon as possible and that the sewerage scheme itself is expected to be completed in about a month. The people of the area will then be allowed to connect to it.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects that work on the provision of a new sewerage scheme at Kinsale, County Cork, will commence.

Proposals for a new sewerage scheme for Kinsale are at present under consideration in my Department. I am not in a position at this stage to say when work will commence.
