Vol. 232 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bread and Flour.

33.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received an application for an increase in the price of bread and flour; if so, when he received it; and when he hopes to make a decision in regard to it.

As already indicated in recent replies to similar questions in Dáil Éireann, it is not the practice to answer questions of this kind.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to a report of a statement by a spokesman for the Irish Flour Millers Association in regard to the price of bread and the marketing of wheat; and what steps the Government propose to take in this matter.

I am aware of the report referred to by the Deputy. At this stage, I do not wish to make any statement in the matter.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will take all necessary steps to ensure that the price of bread is not increased except in proportion to the increase in the average real income of the citizen.

The price of bread must depend on the various production costs and it would not be feasible to operate the suggested form of control.

I consider the control which I exercise at present adequate to ensure that the price of bread is not increased unnecessarily.
