Vol. 232 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Substandard Schools.

23.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give the number of substandard schools in Dublin city: Whether there is any check maintained by his Department on the state of these buildings; and if he will give details of this examination procedure.

Mr. O'Malley

As stated in my reply to a question by Deputy Eileen Desmond on 31st January, 1968, there are 14 national schools scheduled for replacement in the Dublin city area, and 16 listed as being in need of major improvements.

On the occasion of their periodic visits to the schools, my Department's inspectors furnish reports as to (a) the condition of the school premises and surrounds, (b) the sanitation of the school and (c) the adequacy and suitability of the furniture and equipment. Where school premises are found to be deficient arrangements for their improvement or replacement are entered into by my Department, the Office of Public Works and the school manager. If interim improvements are warranted pending the replacement of a school or its reconstruction, my Department sanctions a grant towards the cost of such improvements.

Is there any suggestion about any meeting between the parties involved in this matter concerning substandard schools? Are there any tripartite plans?

Mr. O'Malley

Yes, there are.
