Vol. 232 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Replacement of Corvettes.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence if the replacement of corvettes for fishery protection is contemplated; and, if so, when.

The question of the replacement of the corvettes is under consideration but a decision has not yet been taken in the matter.

Can the Minister say whether or not new vessels will be built here or will we purchase laid-off equipment from some other country?

We have not arrived at that stage at all yet.

The cost of the referendum would pay for a couple of vessels.

I am unable to anticipate what the Government decision will be.

Can the Minister give any indication when it is proposed to make the purchase, now that it has reached the consideration stage?

I have not said we are making any purchase. I said the matter is under consideration. I have to wait until consideration of the matter has been completed before any decision is taken as to what the next step will be.

Has the Minister had any complaints about the inadequacy of the protection of our fisheries?

There have been complaints about the protection of our fisheries over a long period of time. Everybody knows that.

Surely it is worse now because the limit has been increased?

If the Minister is aware that there have been complaints over a long period, surely it is time we did something about it?

I did not say whether the complaints were justified or not.
