Vol. 232 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider the extension of the post-primary schools free transport scheme to cover pupils attending schools which provide advanced commercial courses, not available in the pupils' own catchment areas, and also to cover university students.

Mr. O'Malley

The object of the free transport scheme is to make post-primary education available to children who hitherto were denied it because they lived too far away from the nearest post-primary school.

The scheme applies to all children eligible by distance who are attending second-level courses, including commercial courses, in recognised post-primary schools.

It is not proposed to extend the scheme to university students or to students attending post leaving certificate courses leading to professional or semi-professional qualifications.
