Vol. 232 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newspaper Files in National Library.

51.

asked the Minister for Education why the files of provincial newspapers for the years since 1960 are not available in the National Library; and when and where accommodation will be made available for same.

Mr. O'Malley

Due to the demands on space, it has not been found possible to put the bound volumes of provincial newspapers issued since 1960 on the shelves in the National Library. Additional storage space has been made available in the Four Courts, and when this is fully equipped these papers will be available to the public.

If a reader desires to refer to one of these volumes, is the correct procedure to repair to the Four Courts, or is the correct procedure to make a requisition to the National Library and the volume will be there produced on an appointed day?

Mr. O'Malley

If the Deputy wanted this badly, and if he gave due notice, I do not think there would be any trouble in getting it.

The Minister's customary courtesy has reassured me of that; I am referring to the general public. All I want to know is what is the procedure. Would the general public attend and ask for access to the volume, whereupon they would be asked to return to the National Library within a certain time, or would they be asked to go to the Four Courts to consult the volume there? Perhaps the Minister would let me know at his convenience?

Mr. O'Malley

I shall do that.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
