Vol. 233 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Housing Needs.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the acute shortage of working-class houses within a reasonable distance of the industrial development in Tallaght and Belgard Road, County Dublin; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to have houses provided as a matter of urgency.

I am aware of the need for additional housing, including housing for industrial employees, in the Tallaght area. My Department and the local authorities concerned have been co-operating in the preparation of a programme of urgent drainage works to enable such housing to be provided. I understand that proposals for the acceptance of tenders for these drainage works will be submitted to me within the next week or so.

Consultations have also been proceeding, at my request, between my Department, the Dublin housing authorities, representatives of the Tallaght industries, and other bodies concerned, to determine the extent and nature of the present industrial housing needs in the area. The industries have undertaken to furnish the City and County Manager with details of the industrial employees who require housing in Tallaght, following receipt of which the Manager will submit recommendations to the housing authority for any necessary augmentation of their own housing proposals in the area.

The possibility of the provision by the National Building Agency of a limited number of low-cost houses for certain categories of skilled workers in the area is also being further explored.

Is the Minister aware that while the local authorities are insisting that they have not got drainage facilities available for working-class housing, certain builders are being allowed to proceed with the building of a considerable number of houses that are beyond the ability of industrial workers to buy in the area?

I am not so aware.

The Minister should be aware of it.

If so, that is a matter for the local authorities in the areas.

It is also a matter for the Minister.

It is something that obviously should not happen, and I am not aware that it is happening.

It is happening in a big way.
