Vol. 233 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jury Service Remuneration.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if he can now state when he intends introducing legislation for the remuneration of citizens called upon for jury service.

As I have already indicated, I hope to be in a position towards the end of this year to introduce comprehensive amending legislation in relation to all aspects of jury service and jury trial.

The matter is very urgent. Farmers have not the time to leave their business to come in to act as unpaid judges where a fellow gets £50 for walking up the steps.

Can the Minister indicate how soon it is likely the Cork jurors—who, we know, are annoyed about this matter—will be compensated?

I have not had much time——

I am aware of that——

I hope to treat it as a matter of urgency.
