Vol. 233 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. John's Hospital, Sligo.

29.

asked the Minister for Health the cost of providing a fire alarm system in Saint John's Hospital, Sligo; and what plans are being made to provide Sligo with a new home to replace Saint John's which is now unfit for patients.

A fire alarm system is being installed in St. John's Hospital, Sligo. The cost of the installation is estimated at £2,500 approximately.

Under the plans for the provision of accommodation for the aged in the Sligo area it is proposed to provide accommodation for about 250 patients in new centrally heated buildings on the existing site. Some 200 of these beds will be in new ward units specially designed to cater for the needs of patients who require medical and nursing care. The ancillary accommodation in new buildings will include kitchen, stores, domestic staff quarters and a medical treatment unit with provision for occupational therapy, physiotherapy and chiropody. It is intended that some of the old buildings which have been maintained in reasonable condition will be renovated and retained in use for a further period.

Planning of this major scheme is now in progress and it is expected that it should be possible to invite tenders for the scheme early next year.
