Vol. 233 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Industrial Workers.

37.

asked the Minister for Labour if any minimum wage has been fixed for workers in industry as has been done in the case of agricultural workers.

Under the Industrial Relations Act, 1946, Joint Labour Committees have been established which cater for 21 trades. Arising from the proposals of these Committees the Labour Court has made Employment Regulation Orders fixing minimum wages, which have statutory effect, of approximately 40,000 workers.

The 1946 Act also provides for registration by the Labour Court of agreements relating to wages and other conditions. An agreement, once registered, has statutory effect and applies to all workers of the class specified in the agreement. At present 46 such agreements are registered but a number of them have been superseded by agreements which were not registered.
