Vol. 233 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if any further negotiations have been carried out recently in relation to this country's membership of the EEC.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Council of the European Economic Community has not been able to reach agreement to enter into negotiations at the present time with any of the applicants for membership.

I take it that the Deputy must have in mind the present position regarding the various proposals for closer co-operation between the applicant countries and the members of the Community which have been put forward since the Council meeting of the 19th December. These proposals were discussed by the Council on the 9th March and it was decided to ask the Commission to prepare an opinion on the problems involved. The Commission's Report is expected to come before the Council at its meeting in Luxembourg on Friday next.
